I was an English major at Cornell and I always took quite a few Creative Writing classes and I knew as soon as I started taking those classes that I wanted to write in some capacity and I want to write creatively in some capacity. I did it as an honor thesis. I looked at journalism and I really felt that you know, that academic writing and journalism were not really the paths for me and it was more about sort of what is within my head and you know, not really looking at facts as closely. So, I applied to MFA Programs in Fiction Writing really to hone my craft but to really spend that time in figuring out how I apply my writing skills to a professional roll. I chose Columbia not only because of the quality of the program, but the big reason was that it was in New York City and the networking opportunities and ability to work with different corporations or seek opportunities is that much greater than if I were in Missouri or Texas. So, you know, I was lucky enough to work there and you do really that time writing and concentrating on writing and one of my good Cornell buddies had a cousin who worked at MTV Networks and needed an intern part-time. So, I got my foot in the door that way and you know at that point, I was just doing some you know, entry-level administrative work but you know, some small writing projects here and there and mostly print work and you know, I have never sort seen myself as pigeonholing into one type of writing and that became the beauty of working for the Creative Services Department that I work in. We do a wide variety of work, whether it is advertising, copywriting, speech writing, joke writing, long format, editorial writing. It really runs a gamut. We write for interactive sites. We write for on-air promos. We write for videos to be shown internally and we do some interviews with senior executives. So, you know I found a great place that really has a wide variety of opportunity and creative opportunity as well.
